Plot

During the Mesozoic, a group of Tyrannosaurus rule the dinosaur kingdom. King McAwesome shows his and Queen Wasabi's son Timmy the Rex Lands and explains to him the responsibilities of kingship and the "Mesozoic Circle", which connects all living things in the Mesozoic. McAwesome's brother Destruct covets the throne and seeks to get rid of both Timmy and McAwesome and become king. After school, Timmy and his friend Anastasia the Tyrannosaurus (whom he falls for) are tricked by Destruct into exploring a forbidden dinosaur graveyard, where they are attacked by Microraptors led the ruthless M. McAwesome is alerted about the incident by his majordomo, Vlad the Volaticotherium, and rescues the kids.

McAwesome berates Timmy for disobeying him, but forgives him and explains that the great kings of the past watch over them from the night sky, from then he will one day watch over Timmy. Meanwhile, Destruct visits the microraptors and convinces them to help him overthrow McAwesome. Now young adults, Timmy and Anastasia graduate from school. Timmy is attacked by a Cretoxyrhina, but is rescued by a gang of dinosaurs called the Varies consisting of Vick Velociraptor, Sandoval Stegosaurus, Walden Pteranodon, Katherine Triceratops, and Alan Ankylosaurus.

Timmy and the Varies go to the Rex Lands, where they approach Anastasia. With the Varies' encouragement, Timmy attracts her attention with impressive roar. Anastasia falls for him, but unfortunately, their roaring inadvertently causes a stampede. Timmy, and Anastasia make it to safely, but McAwesome ends up hanging perilously hanging over the gorges' depths. Destruct refuses to help McAwesome, so he instead whacks him off the cliff with his tail, and McAwesome falls to his death. Destruct slyly chastises Timmy for causing his father's death and exiles him. He then signals the microraptors to kill him, but they survive. Accompanied by the Varies, Timmy decides to return to the graveyard and prove himself as a brave king again. Anastasia appears on the scene and tries to join him as his mate. Fearing for her safety, Timmy indirectly insults her, causing her to lash out at him and run off.

A Stupendemys explains that Destruct took over the Rex Lands, prompting Timmy and the Varies to return, which is in ruins. Timmy apologizes to Anastasia for his insult, and the two reconcile. Timmy devises a plan: while the Varies keep the mircoraptors busy, Anastasia will gather the female T. Rexes. Wasabi tries to explain the herds have move on and that it's best to leave Dino Rock. This outrages Destruct, who attacks Wasabi and kills her. Destruct backs him toward the cliff long enough to reveal that he killed McAwesome. An outraged Timmy pounces at him, and the fight begins. As Destruct tries to escape, Timmy corners him and orders him to leave. When Destruct refuses, Timmy throws him over the edge of a cliff. Destruct survives the crash but is mauled to death by the microraptors, who overheard his attempt to betray them.

With Destruct gone, Timmy takes over as king and makes Anastasia his queen. Their newborn son is presented to the Rex Lands, continuing the Mesozoic circle.
